City of Columbus
Moody | Nolan, Inc.
This project involved a complete renovation of the historic Pythian Temple originally constructed in 1926. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building is the only known example of African-American architect Samuel Plato’s work in Columbus.
The scope of this project involved extensive interior and exterior restoration and upgrades including the installation of new mechanical, electrical and ventilation systems, new interior finishes and furnishings, and a new elevator. The building’s exterior was chemically cleaned to restore the facade to its original grandeur. The new marble and woodwork interior details were painstakingly blended to match existing finishes in accordance with NRHP requirements.
The King Arts Complex has become an oasis for cultural and educational activities aimed at preserving and celebrating African-American heritage and artistry while developing greater understanding and harmony among all people.
