Johns Hopkins University Bunting Blaustein Cancer Research Center

Baltimore, Maryland

This 191,000 square-foot medical research facility consolidates the University’s oncology research department in one location. The ten-story building houses laboratories, support space and offices for scientists studying cancer biology, hematologic malignancies, solid tumor research, urologic oncology, cell and gene therapy, molecular virology and GI cancer.

The building’s design incorporates an interstitial mechanical space above each laboratory level, and ten floors of office and support space at each end of the structure. This innovative layout not only allows the scientists to easily transition to and from their offices and their laboratory spaces, it also permits access to critical mechanical systems without impacting sensitive cancer research activities.

A lower level connector, joining the building to the neighboring Koch Cancer Research Center contains a vivarium, a Bio-Level 3 laboratory, support spaces, and serves as a loading dock of the southwest area of campus.

Together, the Koch Building and the Bunting Blaustein Building form the core of the University’s Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center.
