Federal Express Sorting Facility Phase I & Phase II – Indianapolis International Airport

Smoot Construction provided general contracting services for the phased development of this 147-acre campus. 

Phase I involved the construction of 10 separate buildings offering a combined total of one million sf of space. The operation, which is Federal Express’ second largest domestic hub behind its Memphis headquarters, includes a primary sort facility (720,000 sf), a secondary sort facility (167,000 sf), a glycol facility, aircraft aprons, a main entrance building, conveyor and pedestrian bridges, a freight building, a generator building, a ground support equipment building, and a centralized truck vehicle facility. 

The second phase involved the construction of an additional 374.000 sf of space for a support services building (43,000 sf), an addition to the secondary sort facility (130,000 sf) and an addition to the primary sort building (201,000 sf).
