Construction Project Engineer | Project Manager | Superintendent



Construction Project Engineer

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 5 years

EDUCATION: 4-year engineering or construction management degree or equivalent training and experience

REGISTRATION: No requirement

REQUIRED SKILLS: 5 years of relevant construction engineering experience

SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with skill level and experience

Core responsibilities

The Construction Project Engineer could be a project related resource or could work out of the Smoot Construction headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. Regardless of placement, the Project Engineer will be supported by a team of construction experts. The Construction Project Engineer typically reports to the Project Manager and may be in direct report relation to the Construction Superintendent (project dependent) and works closely with company Executives.

When managing a construction project, safety comes first, communication is key, and participation in all construction activities is required. The type of projects to look forward to with this role include higher education facilities, sporting venues, hospitality, correctional, industrial, as well as, joint venture related engagements.

A breakdown of day-to-day activities

  • Review, analyze, and resolve design and construction problems and discrepancies
  • Interact with client representatives, A/E representatives, and contractors as required
  • Insure all project engineering activities comply with the schedule and contract requirements
  • Provide technical support to determine the most cost-effective and schedule efficient methods for construction
  • Manage engineering procedures and other document control functions
  • Track and maintain material procurement
  • Maintain design documents to stay current with on-site construction
  • Assist with schedule maintenance, monitoring for adherence, and advisement of potential schedule problems
  • Resolve problems to ensure quality of construction and maintain specification integrity
  • Represent company as required in all client, A/E, and contractor meetings
  • Confirm contract/purchase order scope is maintained in accordance with contractual requirements
  • Responsible for submittal tracking, project logs; all processing, coordination, and documentation as required to facilitate project. Maintain official project log and documentation files.
  • Perform additional assignments per Supervisor’s direction.

A strong candidate has the following skills and qualifications

  • 4-year engineering or construction degree or equivalent training and experience
  • 5-8 years of relevant construction engineering experience
  • Advance knowledge of construction engineering technology, building codes and standards
  • Complete understanding of the interdependence and relationship between function units
  • Good communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Able to manage software solutions utilized to include Prolog Sky, Bluebeam, Textura CPM, Sage Construction and Real Estate, and scheduling (Primavera P6)
  • Is a problem solver and can easily execute a situation diagnosis
  • Very familiar with construction documents
  • Can provide technical input in support of field activities
  • Has a clear understanding of the technical aspects of all construction disciplines
  • Needs minimal direction and supervision
  • Can train subordinate engineers

Project Manager

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 10 years (preferably in commercial construction)

EDUCATION: 4-year engineering or construction degree, technical training, or relevant experience

JOB LOCATION: Columbus, Ohio

Core responsibilities

Smoot Construction Project Managers lead and collaborate on all aspects of the construction process. Responsibilities include, but is not limited to assessing or authoring scopes of work, determining schedules, allocating resources, and preparing estimates, change management, and managing job costs. The successful candidate is expected to have strong leadership skills to ensure projects are constructed in accordance with our clients’ goals for quality, craftsmanship, budget, and schedule. The Project Manager could be a project-related resource or work out of the Smoot Construction headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. A breakdown of day-to-day activities

  • Assess or author scopes of work and resources required to successfully complete the project
  • Manage and maintain project job costs
  • Organize and staff key field positions
  • Prepare complete estimates and job costs with detailed review of bid proposal, proposed specifications, drawings, take-off and buy-out information, and contracting
  • Establish project objectives, policies, procedures, and performance standards within corporate policy and safety management/adherence
  • Interact with client representatives, A/E representatives, and contractors
  • Manage and control construction process through administrative direction of the on-site superintendent and management team to ensure project is built on schedule and within budget
  • Problem solve and mitigate problems to the best possible outcome.
  • Investigate potentially serious situations, evaluate risk and implement corrective measures
  • Represent the company at all project meetings and negotiations and consult with upper-level manager on all critical issues
  • Manage all financial aspects of contracts to protect Smoot Construction’s interests while maintaining positive working relationships with the client
  • Responsible for schedule control/adherence
  • Assumes responsibility for contractual performance on every project
  • Oversee, train and mentor subordinate team members
  • Perform additional assignments as directed by company executives

A strong candidate has the following skills and qualifications

  • 4-year engineering or construction related degree, or equivalent technical training and experience
  • 10 years in construction management, finance, estimating, and construction supervision experience
  • Ability to apply innovative and effective management techniques to maximize team member performance
  • Knowledge of construction technology, equipment, and methods
  • Strong handle on union labor jurisdictions, negotiations, engineering, project and estimating costs, scheduling, quality control and safety requirements

Superintendent

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 5 years

EDUCATION: 4-year engineering degree or equivalent commercial/industrial construction experience

REGISTRATION: No requirement

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Capability to lead $45M projects

SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with skill level and experience

Core responsibilities

The successful candidate will work on the project assignment within the established boundaries for project pursuits for the Smoot Construction headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. The superintendent will be supported by a team of construction experts. The Project Superintendent may or may not have direct reports and will collaborate the oversight of the project with project assigned team members. The Project Superintendent will report directly to the General Superintendent as well as Executive leadership.

When managing a job site, safety comes first, communication is key, and participation in all construction activities is required. The type of projects to look forward to with this role include higher education facilities, sporting venues, hospitality, correctional, industrial as well as joint venture related engagements.

A breakdown of day-to-day activities

  • Interface with client representatives, A/E representatives, trade contractors, subcontractors, material/equipment suppliers and external parties such as city inspectors, and OSHA
  • Work with the General Superintendent to maintain communications with unions, resolve jurisdictional disputes, and request manpower and equipment
  • Provide day-to-day support of on-site project team and resolve construction problems as necessary
  • Supervise and assume responsibility of craft employees and/or trade contractors and subcontractors for productivity of Smoot crafts (Smoot GC) and efficient use of materials and equipment
  • To meet project and profitability requirements, actively participate in schedule development, implementation, conformance management, and job cost and/or budget management
  • Participate in all Smoot performance evaluations, project personnel transactions, purchase requisitions, field design change requests, and RFIs and submittals
  • Assist project management in developing and implementing project procedures, working documents, and standards
  • Provide technical assistance as required
  • Ensure on-site personnel comply with project procedures, quality control, safety program requirements, and work rules
  • Document violations, notify project management, and recommend and/or implement corrective actions as required
  • Supervise Assistant Superintendent (s)
  • Perform additional assignments per Supervisor’s direction

A strong candidate has the following skills and qualifications

  • 4-year higher educational degree or equivalent commercial/industrial construction experience
  • 1-5 years of construction management and/or craft supervision experience in commercial/industrial construction
  • Ability to control and supervise large teams
  • Knowledge of construction technology, equipment, and methods
  • Experience in craft agreements, jurisdiction, negotiations, engineering, cost control schedules and safety required
  • Exceptional communication, organizational, and supervisory skills
  • Strong handle on job costing, scheduling, quality control and safety requirements
  • Has the ability to create a safety culture that everyone follows
